The entertainment at Mohegan Sun continues to turn up the heat this summer with two powerhouse Hip-Hop performances as part of the Sun Patio Concert Series. Grammy-winning lyricist Lupe Fiasco will kick off the excitement on Saturday, July 19th at 8:00pm, followed by legendary Hip-Hop group The Roots at 9:00pm on Saturday, August 2nd. Both outdoor shows are set to deliver unforgettable nights of live music. The series continues throughout summer with more details available here.

Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, better known by his stage name Lupe Fiasco, is a Chicago-born, Grammy award-winning American rapper, record producer, entrepreneur, and community advocate. The independent rapper who parted ways with his former label, Atlantic Records, following the release of 2015’s Tetsuo & Youth, is pegged as one of the most gifted lyricists and visionaries to grace the mic. Rising to fame in 2006 following the success of his debut album, Food & Liquor, Lupe has released six acclaimed studio albums; Drogas Light, released in 2017 on his own label, 1st & 15th. These albums have netted three platinum singles, three RIAA Gold Certifications, 12 Grammy nominations and one Grammy Award in 2008 for his infectious single, “Daydreamin,” feat Jill Scott. With a trilogy of albums set for 2018 and beyond, Lupe is at his creative peak as an artist. Most recently, Drogas Wave released on September 21, 2018 via 1st & 15th. His efforts to propagate conscious material helped solidify him as GQ’s “Man of the Year” in 2006, and garnered recognition as a Henry Crown Fellow.

Formed in 1987 in Philadelphia, PA, The Roots—Black Thought (MC), Ahmir “?Questlove” Thompson (drums), Kamal Gray (electronic keyboards), F. Knuckles (percussion), Captain Kirk Douglas (electronic guitar), Damon Bryson (sousaphone) and James Poyser (electronic keyboard)—have become one of the best known and most respected Hip-Hop acts in the business. Named one of the “50 Greatest Live Acts” by Rolling Stone, The Roots became the official house band on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where they currently perform every Monday-Friday.
The group’s frontman, Black Thought, is also considered one of, if not the best, rapper of all time and regularly goes viral for his exceptional freestyle talent. Black Thought has also released six solo albums including 2022’s Cheat Codes, which was a collaboration with producer Danger Mouse.
Drummer Questlove also continues to shine and recent successes outside of the music industry include his latest documentary, Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of a Black Genius) is garnering attention and rave reviews and is in the running for an Emmy Award. This follows his Oscar-winning documentary, Summer of Soul, released in 2021.
