Concert Review: Incubus brings ‘Morning View’ to life at Mohegan Sun

Incubus is revisiting the record that transformed their trajectory as a band. Released in 2001, Morning View marked a pivotal moment in the band’s evolution – trading the raw, funk-metal edge of their early years for a more melodic, experimental sound. With lush instrumentals, introspective lyrics, and genre-defying tracks like “Wish You Were Here” and “Echo,” the album showcased their willingness to take risks and solidified their place in early 2000s rock. Over the years, Incubus has continued to push boundaries, blending elements of jazz, psychedelia, and electronica into their alt-rock foundation, building a career rooted in reinvention. Now, more than two decades later, the band is celebrating Morning View with a full-album performance alongside a set of greatest hits, and a glimpse into their future. With their first new record since 2017, Something in the Water, on the horizon, Incubus brought that spirit of reflection and renewal to a packed house at Mohegan Sun Arena, where a sea of longtime, passionate fans gathered to relive the album that shaped a generation.

The night opened with two strikingly different sets from Paris Jackson and Manchester Orchestra. Paris took the stage first, setting an intimate and reflective tone with a stripped-down performance featuring only her voice and a guitar. Bathed in a soft golden spotlight, she delivered a raw and emotionally honest set, drawing from personal experiences in love and heartbreak. Her vulnerability and quiet strength echoed the tradition of classic singer-songwriters, proving that she doesn’t need elaborate production to make a lasting impact. While her father’s musical legacy is undeniable, Paris is carving out a voice of her own, one that speaks with subtlety, sincerity, and soul.

Much to Paris Jackson’s excitement – as she herself noted before performing her second track of the night – Manchester Orchestra followed with a set that wasted no time electrifying the room. In just a few songs, the band fully commanded the stage, building a wall of sound that rose to match the energy of the crowd. Their anthemic, emotionally-charged performance quickly brought people to their feet, shaking off any lingering stillness from earlier in the night. While the whole band delivered with intensity, guitarist Robert McDowell was especially fun to watch, radiating pure joy as he moved across the stage, clearly lost in the music and loving every second of it.

As the lights dimmed and the opening notes of “Nice to Know You” rang out, the energy in the arena shifted. Incubus took the stage with a magnetic presence, launching into Morning View with a sense of urgency and passion, that immediately pulled the crowd in. Frontman Brandon Boyd, a captivating force from the very start, poured himself into every lyric and movement. Of all the members, he seemed to be having the most fun – dancing across the stage, feeding off the audience’s energy, and delivering vocals that felt as fresh and urgent as they did two decades ago. Tracks like “Circles” and “Wish You Were Here” hit with both emotional weight and explosive power, setting the tone for a night rooted in nostalgia for both the band and the crowd.

Even though I’ve been familiar with Incubus for years, I wasn’t expecting just how fan-focused and communal this show would feel. From the start, the band made it clear they weren’t just performing for the crowd – they were sharing the moment with them. They made eye contact, grinned between verses, and fully embraced the chorus of voices singing Morning View back to them. It felt intimate, electric, and entirely alive. At times, it reminded me of what I imagine a Phish concert to be like, where the connection between the band and the fans becomes the real draw, creating an experience that stretches far beyond the music. The set ebbed and flowed between explosive highs and softer, more stripped-back moments, like during the acoustic sections and tracks like “Blood on the Ground,” which gave the night a dynamic emotional range. At one point, Brandon joked, “Somehow I’m still processing this breakup 24 years later, so thanks guys,” adding a playful self-awareness to the emotional weight of the tracks. The continued relatability of Morning View has only deepened Incubus’s bond with their audience, keeping their legacy not just alive, but evolving.

As the band transitioned out of Morning View and into a set of longtime favorites, their playful spirit really came to life. The energy stayed high, but the mood loosened; complete with unexpected, crowd-pleasing covers of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella.” It was a reminder that while Incubus knows how to tap into deep emotion, they also don’t take themselves too seriously, keeping the atmosphere fun, fresh, and full of surprises.

They closed the main set with a rush of fan favorites – “Megalomaniac,” “Anna Molly,” “The Warmth,” “Vitamin” – tracks that hit with the force of memory and the energy of a band still fully in their prime. Each song felt like a surge, a release, the kind of moment you don’t just listen to but feel deep in your chest. Then came “Dig,” tender and raw, followed by “Pardon Me,” a shout of defiance that somehow still lands with clarity after all these years. But it was their acoustic rendition of “Drive” that pulled everything into focus, a final moment of unity as the crowd sang every word back, arms raised, voices cracked from the night. Brandon stood still for a beat, smiling into the roar, and said simply, “Thanks for bringing us with you.” No spectacle. No demand. Just gratitude. For Incubus, this tour isn’t just about nostalgia, it’s about honoring the album that opened a door to reinvention, and the fans who’ve walked through it with them. Morning View might’ve marked their shift into a different sound, but their ongoing return to this era – through touring, reflection, and deep fan connection – shows that growth hasn’t come at the cost of remembering where they started. They’re still chasing something – something real, still growing, still full of purpose. And standing in a packed arena surrounded by fans who’ve held onto these songs for decades, it was clear: Incubus isn’t just looking back. As Brandon Boyd said to the crowd, “Thanks for bringing us with you.” They’re still figuring out what comes next, and bringing everyone along for the ride.
