Does Everyone on ‘It’s Always Sunny’ Hate Rob Mac?

Heading into the new season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, it sure seemed like Rob McElhenney was doing a bit about changing his name to “Rob Mac.” And to be honest, it still seems that way, or at the very least, some sort of publicity stunt.

If Mac’s aim was to get eyeballs on him and the show, it definitely worked, but it also brought to light an overall vibe that the rest of the cast, including his own wife, kind of hate him? Turns out, Mac already teased the name change to Variety back in May, and Kaitlin Olson was not entirely thrilled.

“The kids are really not happy about it, because they have that last name,” Olson says. “And so do I, legally!”

In the same Variety feature, Glenn Howerton equated the name change to Mac buying a soccer team with Ryan Reynolds. Namely, that he was exhausted by both. “You could be telling me something that he’s joking about, or you could be telling me something where he could be in downtown L.A. changing his name right now for all I know.”

Speaking of Wrexham, Olson made a point to note that she’s pretty pissed about that whole endeavor, too.

“We’d talked about not showing their faces,” Olson told Variety. “I remember going through puberty — no kid should be seen publicly before they’re ready to. Everyone’s got their insecurities, and it’s not their fault that we chose this path and that we’re famous. Rob went rogue and put them in a f*cking documentary! I’m still unhappy about that.”

I’m not a smart man, but I am somehow married, so my immediate reaction to that quote was to make a bed on the couch. You never want to f*ck up so bad that your wife is telling a trade publication about it. Good luck with that.

More evidence that the cast is growing tired of Mac’s antics barreled in this week when Charlie Day told The LA Times that he was against Always Sunny doing crossover episodes with Abbott Elementary and The Golden Bachelor. Day first told Vulture’s Roxana Hadadi the same thing back in January, and it sticks out even more in light of the whole Rob Mac shenanigans.

And Rob has these really big ideas, like buying a soccer team. He wanted to do this “Abbott” crossover, and he wanted to do this “Golden Bachelor” episode. To be perfectly frank, I didn’t really want to do both. I think you can do one or the other. The “Golden Bachelor” thing I thought was funny, but I was like, maybe we could just do the “Sunny” characters’ version of it. But to his credit, those are the things that people latch onto and are talking about. I tend to like when we’re not doing the pop culture references as much, but then we have a big back and forth and we argue. And then when we land on it, the second we agree to do it, then I’m always all in, as is Rob. So then we’re both writing together and saying, well, what’s the best version of how to do this?

It sure seems like there’s a recurring theme here: That goddamn soccer team.

Of course, the Always Sunny cast hating Rob is speculation on my part. They all keep coming back for more seasons and giant-ass paychecks, and it’s not like there’s video evidence of Glenn Howerton visibly dying inside as Mac starts gushing about Ryan Reynolds.

*touches earpiece* Folks, you’re not going to believe this…
