Bay Area and California each lose thousands of jobs in June swoon

The Bay Area and California both lost thousands of jobs during June, a loss that represents a setback for regions whose economic foundations have turned wobbly this year.

Employers slashed a net total of 6,800 jobs in the Bay Area, with all three of the region’s major metro areas enduring reduced employment levels in June, a state labor agency reported.

The Bay Area’s job losses in June mark two straight months of employment declines in the region, according to information posted by the state Employment Development Department.

California lost 6,100 jobs last month, the state EDD reported.

The South Bay lost 3,300 jobs in June, while East Bay employers slashed 2,900 positions, and the San Francisco-San Mateo area lost 700 jobs, according to the EDD report. All numbers were adjusted for seasonal volatility.

The statewide unemployment rate worsened to 5.4% in June, an increase from the 5.3% jobless rate for California in May, the state agency report showed.
