Bill Quinnell: Words and Pictures
Bill Quinnell’s solo photography exhibition Words and Pictures will be on view at The Gallery at Still River Editions in Danbury from July 12th through September 27th, 2025. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, July 12th from 2 pm – 4 pm, and it is free and open to the public.
Bill Quinnell is a longtime New Milford photographer who taught at Western Connecticut State University from 1970–2003, finishing his career as an educator as the head of the photography program in the Department of Art. Before he began his vocation, he earned a BA and MA in philosophy and later on, an MFA in photography from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY.
His work is wide-ranging and linked by his observational curiosity—black and white street photography, documentary-style photographs of the now-defunct Hat City Boxing, dreamy fog-drenched landscapes, delicate florals, and repeated motifs that almost resemble strips of movie film. This exhibition is a departure from the retrospective he recently exhibited at Gregory James Gallery, in that he combines both recent and older photographs with reflections inspired by the images—continuations of the stories contained in the photographs. Some images combine contextualization found on the scene, like “Courage and Anticipation,” part of Quinnell’s series exploring Danbury’s amateur boxing clubs in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
“When I was at Pratt, I discovered the photographer Duane Michaels’ book, Now Becoming Then. The first image that struck me was a snapshot of a couple sitting on a bed. Looked like something from the 1950’s. He’s in a suit, she’s in a dress. [Michaels] simply hand wrote ‘I knew there was a time when we were in love.’ The book is a series of similar reflections and, for want of a better description, short stories using images and words.
The first piece I made like this used two photographs of my son, and I reflected on fatherhood. Many years later, I used a picture of two nuns and two secular young women to talk about life’s choices. These were both one-offs. This show represents a concerted effort on my part to create a body of work like this and not simply wait until lightning strikes,” Quinnell writes in his artist statement.
He continues, “I think of them as pages from a journal or diary that happen to use images along with words. The thought of doing this has been in the back of my head for years. Whether it goes any further from here, I don’t know. This is kind of the best test.”
The Gallery at Still River Editions is located at 128 East Liberty St. Danbury, CT, (203)791-1474. Regular gallery hours are 8:30 am – 5 pm Monday through Friday. Please note: closed for vacation July 28 – August 1; closed Labor Day.
