Drew Diffenderfer fires one-hitter as No. 8 seed Santa Clara wins first CCS championship in school history

SAN JOSE — Drew Diffenderfer didn’t need much run support on Saturday as No. 8 Santa Clara battled No. 2 St. Francis SCP for the Central Coast Section Division IV championship game.

But as the game got into the late innings, it became a question of whether he’d get any at all. John Kepner provided a loud answer in the fifth inning.

His bases-clearing double to left-center ignited the Bruins and gave them a three-run lead, and that was all Diffenderfer needed. Santa Clara scored four more runs in the next two innings, as Diffenderfer helped his cause with a two-run single to right in the sixth.

The senior hurler then returned to the mound finished off a one-hit gem. Finishing off an 8-0 shutout, Diffenderfer clinched the first section championship in school history for Santa Clara, the lowest seed in the D-IV bracket.
