Netflix’s global fan event, cleverly named “Tudum,” was Friday night. It’s the streamer’s version of an upfront where they drop first looks, teasers, and trailers for their upcoming projects. But we only have eyes for the much-anticipated teaser for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.
Oscar Isaac stars as Mary Shelley’s visionary, but morally corrupt, Victor Frankenstein. And Jacob Elordi (On Swift Horses) plays his “monster.” That’s fine but I’ll always dream about what could have been if Andrew Garfield hadn’t dropped out of the project.
Frankenstein, published in 1818, was part of the second wave of Gothic literature but is arguably the greatest example of the genre. It’s also considered the first work to blend Gothic themes with science fiction. And there’s no better director than del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Pinocchio, the best Hellboy) to breathe life into a new, cinematic version of Shelley’s story.
Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer (All Quiet On The Western Front), Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz also star. I know we’re all here for Gothic Oscar Isaac though.
Frankenstein will premiere on Netflix this November.
