Amid fears that The Daily Show could be the next late-night show to be cancelled for political reasons — following last week’s Paramount/Skydance cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert — a new addition to The Daily Show’s hosting rotation probably won’t sit well with the execs running the network.
Comedian Josh Johnson, who’s been a Daily Show correspondent for the past year and a half (and joined as a writer back in 2017), is now joining the rotating lineup of anchors who helm the desk Tuesday through Thursday, with Jon Stewart continuing to cover Mondays.
Johnson is also a stand-up comedian and a former writer on The Tonight Show. He joins Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, and Desi Lydic among the rotating hosts.
He makes his debut tomorrow night. The timing is notable: I actually spent an hour last night watching a stand-up set Johnson posted to YouTube this week in which he breaks down MAGA’s Epstein meltdown. It’s excellent — smart, sharp, and funny — and features Johnson reading and dissecting several of Trump’s tweets.
I’d love to see him live (and he’s in Portland, Maine this August, though the show’s already sold out), because his sets feel so timely and relevant. The hour-long set I watched, for example, covered last week’s Epstein news practically in real time. It also makes him an ideal host on The Daily Show.
It may also be worth noting that our friends over on LateNighter have been lobbying for him to anchor The Daily Show for a few months now.
