‘The Penguin’ Emmy Nominations Don’t Bring Us Closer to a Season 2

Unlike Andor, the Television Academy did not drop the ball when it comes to acting nominations for The Penguin. Both Colin Farrell and the show’s dynamite ace in the hole, Cristin Milioti, picked up Best Lead Actor and Best Lead Actress. The show itself was also nominated, but don’t hold your breath for a Season 2.

Despite The Penguin revealing itself as a surprisingly tight crime thriller that, dare I say, was actually better than The Batman thanks to Farrell and Milioti’s performances, HBO and Warner Bros. is notably not racing to capitalize on the show’s success. While taking a victory lap on HBO’s slew of Emmy noms, network head Casey Bloy did a weird little dance around the topic.

Here’s what he told Variety:

The number one thing right now that Matt [Reeves] is dealing with is getting the movie going. I believe they’re making progress there. I know that he and [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] have talked about various ideas. So, could another chapter be in the future? Definitely possible. Right now, I think the priority for Matt is the movie. But I know that Lauren is thinking of various ideas that might work alongside the movie. I think it’s possible. I just don’t know at this point.

And here’s what he told THR:

We get that question a lot. (Laughs.) I will say that I know that [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] has ideas. I know that she and Matt [Reeves] have spoken about it. I also know that Matt is working on the movie [The Batman Part II], so I don’t have any updates. There is absolutely interest, appetite and excitement. I can’t say for sure, because there’s a lot to think about and a lot to do, but we’d certainly be excited if we could figure it out.

Bloy’s responses are pure studio exec toeing the current company line: “Everything is fine, and Matt Reeves is hard at work on The Batman Part II, which is definitely happening.”

However, if The Penguin Season 2 is happening, Cristin Miloti is in the dark. Here’s what she told IndieWire while promoting her well-earned nom:

No one’s reached out. I say the same thing when I’m asked about this, which is really true, which is that I would love nothing more. It remains to be absolutely true that I would really love to revisit her and revisit that world, because I had such a blast.

Colin Farrell, on the other hand, put the nail in the coffin while talking to Deadline:

“I heard that they’re talking about trying to figure out what a second season might look like, but it hasn’t gone farther than that.”

“It was always supposed to be eight hours and that’s it,” said The Banshees of Inisherin Best Actor Oscar nominee.

While Farrell may have shot down the prospects of The Penguin Season 2, he did add an interesting wrinkle to the ongoing The Batman Part II drama by claiming he’s about to read the script any minute now.

“But I’m very close to it. I can’t wait. I’m going to have to block out a few hours when that happens and really put the kettle on and put a nice cup of tea on and pay attention,” said Farrell, who spoke with Deadline from the Santa Monica set of Apple TV+’s Season 2 of Sugar.

“Matt is an extraordinary writer and a highly intelligent artist. I will imagine that the script will be riveting and incredibly deep and he’s taken he’s time with it and that’s because he’s a perfectionist.”

To Farrell’s credit, his answer was far more convincing than James Gunn, who gave this weird response when asked about the script on the Superman red carpet:

Nope, nothing to worry about there. It’s not like we’re watching the Robert Battinson-verse come to a screeching halt despite a wave of critical acclaim and award nominations. Things couldn’t be better!
