Bill Lawrence’s Scrubs is one of my all-time favorite comedies. Though the series itself struggled to avoid cancellation for nine seasons (and one network switch), it had a strong base of support from its ardent fans. Some of us even liked the ninth season — Kerry Bishé, Eliza Coupe, and Dave Franco were great, even if the series had lost much of its original cast.
The show gained some new followers (and reminded longtime fans how much we loved it) during the pandemic when Zach Braff and Donald Faison hosted a popular Scrubs rewatch podcast. The timing felt especially meaningful, given the vital role doctors and nurses played during that period. A lot of us spent hours walking that year, listening to Braff and Faison shoot the shit with cast members and guest stars—and also talk, at length, about the episodes that didn’t age well (there was a whole episode devoted to apologizing for the blackface episode). It was a comforting distraction that reignited interest in a reboot (and helped launch Braff and Faison’s second careers as T-Mobile pitchmen).
That reboot is now official, and it’s coming sooner than many of us may have expected. It’s been greenlit for the 2025-26 season, which means it could arrive as soon as midseason. Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke have closed deals to return alongside Zach Braff, and other former cast members are expected to sign on as well. Scrubs is not Scrubs without Dr. Cox, so John McGinley better be the first call they make. Judy Reyes, who played Carla, should be the second—though she may be conflicted out as a series regular on High Potential. Still, discussions are underway to allow her to appear on both. The show will also need Neil Flynn to return as the Janitor. Unfortunately, Sam Lloyd passed away during the pandemic, so there will be no Ted—heartbreakingly.
The reboot would see J.D. Dorian (Braff) and Christopher Turk (Faison) working together for the first time in years, forced to navigate new challenges and evolving medical technologies—while still maintaining their bromance. In addition to returning cast members, new characters will be introduced. Original showrunner Bill Lawrence will continue to consult, but with his other commitments (Shrinking, Bad Monkey), showrunning duties will fall to Scrubs alums Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra.
