Dan Trachtenberg has technically been in the business since 2003, when he began as a commercial director before gaining Hollywood’s attention with a seven-minute short set in the world of the Portal video game in 2011. That was enough to land him a directing gig on an action sci-fi heist film that, unfortunately, fell through—just like his next project: a film adaptation of Y: the Last Man.
In 2016, he finally made his feature film debut with 10 Cloverfield Lane, which honestly should have given him enough street cred to score a big franchise. And it did: he landed the Uncharted gig, but that fell through, too, unfortunately for the Uncharted movie that ultimately got made.
But then he made Prey, maybe the best film shot during the height of the pandemic. Hulu released it on streaming in 2022, and it’s probably one of the ten best movies ever released straight to streaming. Still, it’s hugely disappointing that we didn’t get to experience it in theaters. It completely revived the Predator franchise and finally, hopefully, gave Dan Trachtenberg a permanent place on the map.
Now he’s returning with another Predator flick, Badlands. I wasn’t impressed with the first teaser — it looked like another run-of-the-mill Predator film — but the newest trailer is legitimately badass. This, I’m excited to see. I’m even more excited to see what happens if Trachtenberg is freed from IP and gets to make his own original films. Give this man $100 million and let him make whatever the hell he wants.
Predator: Badlands hits theaters on November 7th.
