Young authors and local history shine in collaborative book project at the Gunn Museum

This spring, the Gunn Museum and Washington Primary School collaborated on an educational creative writing project that brought local history to life through student voices. First and second grade students visited the museum to explore historical artifacts and learn about the role museums play in preserving the past. Guided by museum curator Amy Campanaro and volunteer Eileen Hearn, and supported by teachers Sara Feola and Katelynn Kusmierz, students transformed their experience into a collection of imaginative stories—each told from the perspective of a museum object.

The final result is a bound book, created in the Makerspace Lab at the Gunn Memorial Library, showcasing stories like Mr. Warm the bed warmer and Boardie the blackboard. This creative project not only celebrates student voices and historical imagination but also highlights the strong ties between the school, museum, and library. The book is available for viewing and borrowing at the Gunn Memorial Library, offering the entire community a chance to enjoy the students’ unique perspective on Washington’s past.

The Gunn Museum is located at 5 Wykeham Road in Washington, Connecticut, we are open Thursday,Friday 10:00AM – 4:00PM and Saturday 10:00AM-3:00PM.
